Southern African Scholarship

Brighton SU Southern African Scholarship

The SU Southern African Scholarship scheme was set up in 1987/88 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the death of Steve Biko, a political activist and former leader of the Southern African Students Association who died in police custody under the Apartheid regime in South Africa. Apartheid was a racist policy where black South Africans were not afforded equal rights. Terrible things happened to the black population and its activists during the Apartheid regime, including shootings, torture, murder and the deliberate suppression of all black people. Although Apartheid ended, the effects on the black population of Southern Africa are still felt. As a result, the Union supports the Southern African Scholarship to help black Southern African Scholars on courses which directly benefit the wider community when they return home.

Apartheid had a wide ranging effect beyond South Africa, as a result the Scholarship supports students in Namibia, Swaziland, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, Angola and Madagascar.

Southern Africa needs this kind of support now more than ever especially since the ravages of HIV/AIDS and disease have devastated countries. As a result the scholarship has recently been supporting medical students and nurses from Zambia. The nurses developed an Intensive Care Course which they can then teach at the Lusaka Nursing School to nurses from all over Zambia. This small but effective initiative will ensure that where there has been only one Intensive Care Nurse in a country of nearly 12 million people, in a couple of years there will be nurses all over Zambia specialising in this important area of nursing. So you can see how the money that the Union raises ensures real positive changes to those who need it most.

How is the money for the scholarship raised?

The Union raises money for the scholarship through fund raising events throughout the year and from collection tins across the University. Please do give any spare change you have when you see these tins. Even a penny can make a big difference.
