Sustainability in action
Being an environmental science student I have come to learn the systems style understanding of elements of our environment. I have recently taken up an internship with the sustainable development unit of the university and through this work and my studies I have began to understand in depth the issues in the institution, yet also the benefits of having such a large body of people. I see the university in a transition stage to a more sustainable future and that there is great potential to actively make a difference in the wider society. I myself would like to see the implementation of a revised Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) throughout campuses with the creation of new habitats and conservation of existing. Im currently working on recommendations for a revision of a BAP, and feel that the institution is more than capable to improve its biodiversity while working in its financial constraints. Another issue that I feel that needs to be addressed is the universities travel plan, and would like to see the university engaging with both staff and students to reduce their environmental impact travelling to, from and between campuses. Steering groups and institutions such as SAN are highly important to helping us achieve these goals and greater support should given, with dissemination integrated in every stage. Staff from management level to ground level should be encouraged to take serious actions on issues of sustainability and involve students in the largest possible extent to help create a more sustainable future for all.
