Biff Mooney

Women's Convenor

Let's work together

There are two main issues that I would like to address if I become Women’s Convenor:

1. Raising money for, and awareness of the Survivors’ Network, a Brighton based organisation that supports women who have experienced sexual violence
2. Promoting the visibility of women in traditionally male-dominated fields

Survivors’ Network
Survivors’ Network provides a range of services for women and girls who have experienced sexual violence, including counselling, a drop in, and advocacy. I want to run a campaign to raise money for this organisation, whilst raising awareness of the service among students at the same time. It is important to break the silence surrounding sexual violence- “Abuse thrives on secrecy, the more that we talk about sexual violence and abuse the harder it becomes to keep abuse and violence hidden.”

Visibility of women in traditionally male-dominated fields
Although things are improving, women are still underrepresented in many fields, for example Engineering or Science. International Women’s Day is celebrated on the 8th March every year, and I think that this is the perfect opportunity to celebrate our achievements. If students are interested, we could try to organise talks from successful women.

My experience
I have represented students on several occasions before, and I was Chair of the Senior Students in college. As Chair, I had experience running campaigns and fundraisers, as well as responding to student feedback. I was also course representative for the last two years.
