There are moments when one word or phrase represents the feelings and temperament of an era. Today the catchphrase on everybody’s lips is ‘austerity’.
It is increasingly important in today’s economic climate that undergraduate, and graduate students reach a high academic standard if they wish to succeed in the ‘real world’. Whilst I believe that yes, it is important to achieve a high academic standard during your studies, it is also important to gain invaluable work experience whilst you do not have the constraints and responsibilities of an adult life.
As a fourth year student who has recently returned from a placement, sandwich, year, I feel that I can bring encouragement, dedication, determination and passion to the role of School of Service Management Rep. The 15 months that I spent on my placement allowed me to fully gage how crucial work experience is but also how crucial succeeding in your studies is. I truly believe the two go hand in hand. They are a formula for success and I want more students to have the opportunity to really bring their studies to life, allowing them to achieve their full potential and discover what their passion is. For me, being the School of Service Management Rep would mean helping to open up a world of possibilities to my fellow students.
Employers not only want a stellar academic record but they also want, if not expect us to have an impressive résumé of experience. There are so many possibilities in the outside world that we do not discover just by having our heads in books and so many doors to be opened by non academic experience. I want each student to leave university with the skills and passion to succeed in life and my aim is to support them in so doing.
