► NM SAR Sophie Carpenter

 Sophie still is listening – Have your say!

I am running again for the School of Nursing and Midwifery  Rep because I feel that midwives and student nurses need someone they can trust to voice their opinions and issues to the people who can make a difference to our time at university.

There are 3000 student nurses and midwives within the School of Nursing and Midwifery and each one of us has the potential to challenge and change.  After talking to students from the school these are some of the issues and task that I will be addressing if elected;

·       Represent your views within the Student Union

·       Continue to develop the Open Forum

·       More drop in sessions with lecturers

·       Access to equipment to practice clinical skills

·       A revision of the amount of anatomy and physiology lectures

·       A simpler timetable and planner

·       Faster access to personal tutors

·       More subject focus on individual branches

·       More practical sessions with a lecturer present to enhance skill base

·       A social event for the whole school

·       Meet regularly with your course reps

Since becoming the rep in November 2009, I have been a source of communication for a number of student nurses and midwives. I have created an open forum that gives student nurses and midwives a stage to talk about issues that affect us. I also have arranged to meet with your course reps so they can give you the information regarding decisions being made within the Student Union. I feel that if elected again, I will have more time to make the changes that you want me too. There is so much to be done and I want to be the person you trust to do this!

I continue to have four means of communication that will enable you to contact me. I have a mobile number, a Facebook group, an email account and finally I have created an Open Forum where we can all meet up and discuss what you feel needs to be said. You are invited to come along, to listen, to talk and to make suggestions, tea and biscuits will be supplied! I will endeavour to maintain good communication between students on all campuses by visiting each of the sites if requested.

I promise, if elected I will be the best advocate I can be, for us. I will strive to be the voice that the School of Nursing and Midwifery deserves. We are embarking on a journey into an amazing profession, where we will be acting as advocates for people. We deserve the best possible start to our careers, and you are in the best position to improve and change it for the better. Let us work together to be heard and make a difference, for us and for the student nurses and midwives of the future.
