My name is Robert Adjarhore and I am currently in my second year studying biomedical science and I believe that the combined power of students has a huge potential to help us have a more enjoyable university life experience.
During my two years here I have been fortunate enough to have had an active part in the Students’ Union, as the president of the African & Caribbean Society (ACS) and also a member of the society’s federation committee, member of the Believer’s Loveworld, sat on the Union Council, represented ethnic minorities on national level, been a Course Rep, as well as simply being a student.
If elected as a non-portfolio representative, I would focus my service on the following areas;
SOCIETIES & SPORTS
Societies and sports should reflect the politics and values of UBSU. With the limited funds available to UBSU, societies and sports clubs don’t get funding for everything they want to do.
I would campaign to provide better support especially to societies by providing a database of venues which can be used for free events, better publicity through the pebble and internet and encouragement to get the society recognized throughout the university to provide a better understanding of what it offers. I will coordinate campus events with days of relevance such as Black History Month, International women’s day etc.
I would create a fun and inclusive environment by making societies and clubs more aware of each other. I would make sure society’s committee members get relevant training and support.
DIVERISTY AND REPRESENTATION
Our university has to face many new challenges such as funding cuts and I strongly believe its UBSU responsibility to include everyone in the decision-making process. As a course rep, I have experience in fighting for students and students’ interests to bring about positive change.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS & ETHNIC MINORITIES
I would work closely with the international student officer to ensure that international students are aware of the union as well as the facilities both within and outside the university and that they are getting a value for their money. I would be a voice for ethnic minorities representing students of African, Asian and Caribbean heritage. I would campaign to increase the representation of ethnic minorities in the democracy of the union.
EASTBOURNE AND HASTINGS
I would help support the respective campus representatives in ensuring that the representation of students in these campuses is not ignored.
