Non-Portfolio executive for Sustainable Transport
Tim Warin
Mission statement:
Sustainable transport representative - Working to better connect Brighton students in safer, cheaper and more environmentally friendly ways.
Manifesto:
My name is Tim Warin and I’m a second year Environmental Science student. I’ve been active in the Student’s Union for a year as the Ethical & Environmental officer and ran the now defunct Environmental Society before that. Having sat on union council and university management groups for a year I understand how to go about changing things within the institution and how to use the weight of our students to get people outside of the university to listen to our issues.
As a cross-campus university, we’re all affected by how we get around. Whether it’s trying to negotiate the hellish Sainsburys roundabout on a bike or waiting hours for a bus which goes anywhere near your halls, transport affects you.
What we settle for is often overpriced and not up to scratch. Collectively, our students spend a huge amount on local transport and I want to ensure that this money is going into the pockets of people who are trying their hardest to improve the situation, both for us and the local community and not just trying to squeeze profit out of us.
Sustainable transport doesn’t only mean environmentally sound transport. It encompasses all aspects surrounding the impacts of our transport decisions and how we can work to make transport positive for the local community, health, the environment and our wallets.
So far I have made some valuable changes to the state of transport around the university. Big Lemon bus passes are now on sale and the Big Lemon bus is powered partly by waste oil from the Rumblin’ Tum. I have negotiated a discount for students on bikes from Evans and want to take this link further. Bike tool kits are going into all halls of residence and want to continue to get people fixing their own bikes and learning the skills needed to keep riding.
Next year I want to:
- Get as many students on bikes as possible
- Enable students to look after their bikes and support other bike users with these skills
- Further promote the Big Lemon bus and forge greater links with them
- Make parking fair and give priority to those who need it most
- Create links with the local council to improve cycle paths and make travel safer
