ONE VOICE CANNOT BE HEARD, BUT MANY VOICES CAN
Hi, my name is Tamara Labelle, and I'm campaigning to be your mature student representative. It seems that students are officially termed as being a mature student once they are 21 or over. (please don’t get me to reference that bit of info!!) Well, that makes me a very much more mature student! I'm 36, and with two children, I have decided to do a full time business with marketing degree, to realise my potential. And I have to say I'm loving it.
In my opinion, coming to Uni can be pretty scary, as well as fantastic. There's so much going on, loads of new people to meet, and all that work. I really do feel that unless you can keep totally up to speed as a student, you can miss out on the great opportunities that are around you.
What a juggling act.....Those mature students who have outside commitments, such as work, family, or children, really do need the support to ensure that they too don't miss out on great opportunities. It can be all too easy forget to enjoy the experience, when juggling so many things at once.
Other mature students who may not have so many other outside commitments, can take part in many more of the social activities. Nevertheless, it can be nice to know that there are many other students around you, who are of a similar age group, with similar life experience.
This is where I come in!!! As your mature student representative, I would try to ensure that no mature students would miss out on those great opportunities that are around them, and that no mature student would ever have to feel ever so slightly embarrassed that they're not 18 anymore.
I would help improve communication amongst the mature student population. This could be through organised social events, or social networking sights such as face-book. I see my role as the central part of a mind map, as part of the new student union, bringing mature students together, so that they can make the most of university life, without feeling left out.
Changes, changes, everywhere....There are many changes constantly going on in the world around us, and our University is no different. Some changes we like, some changes we don't. I want to be here, for you to tell me what changes you like, and what changes you don't like. One voice cannot be heard, but many voices can. I can take your voices, right to where they can be heard, and let your opinions be known, to make that difference. Go on, make that difference, vote for me, vote Tamara Labelle.
