► CUCR Vicky Weeks

Setting A New Standard

My name is Vicky Weeks and I’m standing for Chair of the Union Council of Representatives. With this position being available for student election for the first time, if elected I will be dedicated to achieve my aim of setting a new standard for Brighton SU, grounded on the principles of; reliability, transparency and accountability.

RELIABILITY

  • In my time at college, I was elected as Finance Officer for the Student Union. In this role I was entrusted with sole control of the entire Student Union budget, and so I have experience in not only devising entire budgets but also in passing them with a majority vote by the Union representatives, Which if elected, will be one of my principle responsibilities. Also within this role I also gained experience of chairing sub committees involved with events and advertisement for the Union.

  • This year at university, I have been serving in the role of the President of the Drama Society, where I have been able to expand upon my experience of chairing committee meetings, ensuring I facilitate a fair debate on key issues, whilst maintaining control of the meeting where there are passionate feelings of differing opinions. Requiring the ability to remain impartial and hold all members to account.

  • This year I have also served on the SU’s Society Federation, where I have again gained valuable experience of providing the best service possible for the students, whilst working to a budget. With my time on Soc Fed I have also been involved in advising union policy effecting the election of the new Soc Fed committee and chair next year. In this process I was able to use my experience to ensure there was discussion of all possible outcomes, which were then summarised and outlined as the individual possibilities, allowing an overall vote to be made. I believe this quality is essential to the role of Chair of Council, and if elected I will ensure all issues to be voted on are decided upon in this way.

  • I am currently in my second year of my Accounting & Finance degree. In studding this field for the two years at university and two years in college, I have been training on how to hold persons accountable for their actions and the results they then produce. I am confident that if elected to this role I will be able to transfer these skills, to ensure the students of Brighton SU can have reliability in their Chair of Council

TRANSPARENCY

  • One of the most important aspects of the Chair of Council role will be to facilitate a fair and open debate. I believe that I am tough enough to cut off sabbatical officers when others need to get their point across.

  • If elected chair I will open the doors of council like never before. I will push to have all union meetings streamed online so that student reps will be held accountable for the things they say.

  • I will hold all executive officers to account for their actions each month and put them under proper scrutiny so that you the students get your money’s worth out of your sabbs.

  •  I will ensure that the minutes for all council meetings can be clearly found on our website.

  • Not only this but I will write a monthly summary of all of councils votes and upcoming debates through all student media including BURST Radio, Brighton TV and the Pebble.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • I believe that accountability begins at home and if I am not held to account then how can I expect others to be. This is why, if elected I will ensure that I am easily accessible to students to hear their questions and concerns about the actions of their SU Council

  •  I will forcefully advocate Councils behalf at the new Union Trustee Board because I believe that policy decisions must be made at Council by you democratically elected representatives and nowhere else.
