► VPW Amy Marler

Hello all,

I am Amy Marler a current final year student studying Humanities at the University of Brighton.

I know what you are thinking; manifestos are not the most exciting thing for you to spend your time reading! But if you could take a couple of minutes to read mine I promise it will be to the point.

So why vote for me?

I am a strong willed, approachable and passionate individual who can talk openly about what I believe in.  I have been working for Brighton University as an Aim Higher mentor but also in student services finding out how students have got on after life at Brighton and getting feedback on their experiences. Throughout my time working in these positions I have gained a good knowledge and understanding of what affects students and the Impact that the Union can have on these issues facing them today. I have also participated in numerous events and activities the UBSU had to offer.
I am so enthusiastic about the UBSU and if elected as a sabbatical I will be committed to tackling the problems faced by current and future students as well as ensuring that students have a voice which is heard. I want to be a part of the team which is driven by improving the experience of all Brighton uni students.

Student life is more than just having your head in the books; it is also about socialising, sports, activities, societies and most of all having a life outside of work.

If you are anything like me you will know the stress exams, dissertations and essays can have. However I have found, from talking to many of you, that the majority of students are unaware of the support that is available to all of us when things aren’t quite right. Brighton university in not only here to cater for your educational needs, it is here to support your physical, emotional and social needs as well. It’s all about your wellbeing.

Students tell me that not enough of you feel engaged with this University and the UBSU. I have experience in the general functioning of the UBSU and how it can change things but have also seen the successes and mistakes that previous sabbaticals have made from their time in office. I want to utilise this to help make a difference to the organisation that has proved to be such a big part of my time at Brighton.

I have researched and spoken to many of you about the problems you face with regards to your wellbeing whilst here. There were so many issues that you all felt needed changing. The most popular views and feedback I have had, are summed up in my six policies;

·      Finance is definitely at the top of all of our priorities and many do not know the support that is available to us all. Promoting things like the Access to learning fund and Bridging Loan will help towards this. At the end of the day we all feel better when we know we can pay rent.

·      To continue development of the Course Rep System. Many do not know who their student reps are. Reps do a very important job as they are, most importantly, an outlet for all of us to view our concerns. I want to improve the communication between reps and the students they represent.

·      Having separate campuses around East Sussex has meant that there is a strong feeling of segregation and a lack of engagement from campus to campus. Especially considering there is no longer a VP Eastbourne and Outreach. I wish to confront this with the help of the student services on all campuses as well as the student reps. I feel communication in the key to solving this and I want to promote to other sites that there voice is still being heard.

·      From personal experience I know that accessing the University’s disability services can often be a daunting and long drawn out process, especially when you don’t know where to turn. If elected, I would commit myself to working with Student Services in order to improve the accessibility of their services so that more students feel able and confident to access the support they require.

·       With the current economic system the way it is many of you were concerned with your prospects after graduation, what you could do to boost your job prospects and even what path to chose. I will tackle this by working closely with the careers centre to further promote their volunteering scheme, careers advice and information events.

·      To ensure that all students are afforded the same opportunities and experience whilst at university. I would look to bringing together all groups within the student body with the aim of promoting a more inclusive university experience.

·      I hope that this has helped convince you that I am the best candidate for the position of Vice President Wellbeing and that when it comes to voting time I hope that you will please log on to student central and vote Amy Marler as your #1 candidate. Voting starts 10am 15th March round the clock until 4pm 19th March.
