► VPW Jemima Pope

JEMIMA POPE – FIGHTING FOR YOUR WELLBEING

My name is Jemima Pope, I’m a final year Health and Social Care student at the University of Brighton and I’m running for the position of Vice President of Wellbeing because I have the dedication, passion and approachability for the role.

Recently I’ve realised how important the Student Union is to the wellbeing of students and now I’m passionate about spreading the word and getting more people involved as this will make sure the Union is run in the fairest way possible.

I have been studying health and social care for the last two and a half years and have studied modules based specifically around the concept of wellbeing; the term is even used in the title of my dissertation. My comprehensive understanding of the different aspects of wellbeing is one of the reasons that I am the best candidate for this role.

Another skill that makes me ideal for the role of wellbeing VP is my experience of supporting those with severe mental health issues; the qualities enabling me to do this can also be applied to the role of wellbeing VP. These skills include organisation, support, a non- judgmental attitude and not only listening but knowing how to act upon what I‘ve listened to.

UBSU is not engaging with the student population to the degree that it needs to be in order to make the best of student wellbeing. As VP of wellbeing I would speak to as many students as possible, not just in the first year but at all stages of study, reminding students who I am, how they can contact me, and what I can do for them.

Here are my main points of action:

·      For the first two years of University I agreed to be a course rep and then heard nothing more about it. By this year I was fed up of being underrepresented and with very few people on my course we were often forgotten about. If I am elected I would like to improve the course rep system and support course reps so that more students feel adequately represented.

·      The social opportunities in the first year are still exclusionary to many students, leaving some feeling isolated. Mature students, students who don’t live in halls, international students and many others. As VP of Wellbeing I would communicate with students and with the VP of activities & events in order to offer different social options for the diverse range of students at our university.

·      It is almost guaranteed that every student will need to access some form of health service during their stay at university; from doctors to counseling and sexual health services. Many students, especially 1st years, have raised concerns about the limited UNISEX service. I believe that if this service is cut, a replacement must be offered and if I am elected I will work to towards making it a success.

·      The University offers a wide range of services for those with disabilities however, in some cases these services are not utilized by those who need them. I will communicate with disability, dyslexia and other wellbeing service providers and (where possible) their users in order to make these services more accessible and efficient.

·      Wellbeing is not just about the health and social sides of university life. It is also about student accommodation and finances, as the VP of wellbeing I would not forget this. I would also encourage students to communicate their ideas of how the university can complement their efforts towards maintaining their own wellbeing, for example with exercise, budgeting, and nutrition.

VOTE JEMIMA POPE as your #1 candidate for VP Wellbeing

Voting is open from 15th – 19th March.
