► VPCC Sophia Tremenheere

‘ACTION IS THE FOUNDATIONAL KEY TO ALL SUCCESS, AND ACTION IS THE FOUNDATION OF MY PROMISE TO YOU’

My name is Sophia Tremenheere and I am a fourth year student studying International Business and Spanish.  I am running for VP Campus and Communications.

Why do I deserve your vote?

Currently I am the Faculty Representative for Management and Information Sciences where I am actively involved in attending meetings and giving feedback of what students would like to see improve.  This has given me great insight into the structure and processes related to the  UoB and UBSU.  I did not realise at the beginning of the year, how much being part of the UBSU would shape my experience and make it a truly enjoyable one.  My past experience’s have allowed me to see and experience other student organisations on a national level as well as on an international level. I worked in Buenos Aires, Argentina for 3 months organising events for international students, I taught English in a rural Mexico village for 2 months, and studied at the University of Salamanca, Spain during my placement year.  This led to me writing an article and having it published in UoB’s newpaper, ‘The Pebble’.  All these experiences have allowed me to realise what makes up a student’s experience from different perspectives, and have helped me to build up a significant level of knowledge about what students want. I would like to make the UBSU have a big impact on in your student life whether it is raising awareness, informing you what is happening around UoB, offering the best facilities available to you, or giving you something to pride yourself on.

I am an approachable, honest and friendly person and feel that my personal traits will help to reach the following goals.

My Proposals

Through the help of feedback of you as students, I have come up with some action points to help improve your experience at Brighton University, which I hope to accomplish if I was to gain a position within the UBSU.  A Greater STUDENT UNION PRESENCE through:

·      CAMPAIGNING: there appears to be a lack of student campaigns. I want to see students more involved in expressing their opinions.  For example I did not see any campaigns for the NUS ‘Go Green’ event during February 2010 unlike other universitiesand no fund raising was done for the Haiti Cause. From my time in Spain, campaigning was a regular event on the campus, helping to create curiosity, involvement and a ‘talking point’ amongst peers.

·      TRANSPARENCY: I would like to create a greater participation in the Annual General Meeting (AGM), giving knowledge of who is representing you within the Student’s Union, the ability for students to have a greater involvement such as through discussion as well as well as access to information about University plans highlighted by Hastings Campus.

·      UP TO DATE INFORMATION AVAILABLE: There is still out of date or lack of information clearly displayed on the SU Website and Student Central.  For example a lot of students were frustrated about opening times for campuses and whether their classes were on during the month January due to the snowy weather and sewage problems in the Aldrich Library.  I also plan to make sure that officers provide weekly updates of what they have been doing via blogs, the SU official website, The Pebble and making full use of the TV screens at each school and helping to develop a greater SU presence on Facebook

·      EMPHASIS AND DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENT-LED MEDIA: via the Pebble, Brighton University Radio ‘BURST’ and launch regular podcasts.   Podcasts that are easy accessible and downloadable should be available to allow students to keep update with UoB information, as well streaming BURST throughout all campuses as well as creating more awareness of it’s existence.  Also I would like to ensure that all campuses receive issues of the Pebble at the same time.

·      CAMPUS FACILITIES:

·      Free of charge CASH-MACHINES  particularly on Falmer Campus and within Mithras House

·      More DESIGNATED SMOKING AREAS, with some form of cover from the weather

·      WIRELESS ACCESS improvements, especially within the library

·       create better ‘CHILL OUT’ ZONES on each site including the Cockcrofts’ SU café.  Having spoken to students they want to see more done in the SU area, and so I would like to improve this by taking your ideas and developing this area to your wants and needs.  I would also like to see a better selection of food at more reasonable prices

·      Following the successful trial at Cockcroft library and demand, 24/7 LIBRARIES across all campuses during exam periods

·      Expansion of VOLUNTEER SCHEMES and further development of relationships within the community: through my own personal experience I think this opportunity for students is valuable as well as enjoyable.  I plan to develop a range of schemes in different sectors, which can also compliment a large number of student’s courses.

o   Help students have MORE OF A VOICE.  Although this was dismissed at a Computing Board meeting, there is a need for student lockers which can realistically be achieved.  I hope to solve this problem, as well as other arising issues other students may have.

o   STUDENT TRAVEL price reduction on buses at Hastings Campus. There have been agreements to introduce the Unirider student concession if a suitable subsidiary is arranged by the Council or University. I plan to make such arrangements as soon as possible to ensure that this implemented.

However these will not be the only propositions I will offer. Through interaction with students (from every campus) I plan to listen to even more needs and put them in place as soon as possible to make sure that you benefit from them, after all its your opinions that count the most, and act as the drive behind the existence of the students union.  Pablo Picasso once wrote ‘Action is the foundational key to all success’ which is the fundamental idea on which I will base my role,  always ensuring that I strive to do everything I can be a success as a VP officer. A key element to this ‘success’ will be to ensure that the lines of communication are more relevant to you and your needs.

If you have any comments then feel free to contact me at saet@brighton.ac.uk

Thank you for taking the time to read my manifesto and hope that you believe that I should represent you.

So VOTE SOPHIA TREMENHEERE for VP CAMPUS AND COMMUNICATIONS.
