Kate Watty
Vice President Campus and Communication
Manifesto:
Communication, compassion and creativity.
Let’s bring Brighton together for a future as vibrant as it is secure.
Let’s work together. Vote for Kate Watty!
My name is Kate Watty and I’m a final year Photography student. I am running for the position of Vice President Campus and Communication because I feel that I have the right qualities – enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment – to help make a difference to student life and encourage development of digital and print communication.
What we don’t want to become as students is passive and complacent. Instead we need to try and encourage each other to be involved in all areas of student life in order to improve things for everyone. I am interested to learn as much as I can about all the different kinds of campuses there are across the country and have become involved in many discussions with friends at other universities about how student life can be improved. As a dedicated member of the Drama Society two years running and being part of the committee this year I have been able to develop all kinds of communication skills as well as focusing on decision making and initiative. I have always had a keen eye for noticing where changes can be made for the better and a strong sense of commitment to whatever it is I become involved in. As a new member of the hockey team I have discovered all manner of problems associated with the way in which messages are delivered and received around the campus and conversation with friends has made me realise all the ways in which the system can be updated.
You’re saying why “Vote Watty” over these other people for the same job of Vice President Campus and Communication? As a hard-working and caring student I aim to talk to you as much as I can about what is needed and to give you regular feedback to make sure you feel that you are also involved. Change is a process and the journey begins with the planting of simple ideas and mutual attendance to the desire for growth. Talks and plans are already in use for the development of Preston Barracks as well as Cockcroft Building. I will ensure that we get what we need to live well and to learn and have fun on these sites.
If I get elected I will fight for:
A proper Student Union on the new location site. Bars serving drinks at decent prices, food outlets serving cheap but good food, a club with a venue equipped for gigs and dj nights. This will be a place where students can be paid to work as well as providing a meeting place for social and cultural events; a place that allows you to feel that you have a ‘home away from home.’
A safer environment for us to study in. Security remains our biggest problem. Theft by non-students of cars, bicycles, computers and personal things is a regular occurrence while the campus remains vulnerable in many places from those who are not meant to have access. We need tighter control so that students can have a happier and safer environment in which to study and have fun.
A realistic representation of your opinion and giving you your own union that provides a reasonable approach when allowing students the option to have control, I think empowerment to the editors, committees and members of each and every society, team and part of the student body is a very important feature. It is your Union and your University. With this in mind I want to make the most of the student community rep scheme, involving the local community with yourselves, providing support, consultations and expanding local volunteering projects that bring you into the region and give you experience within other neighbouring environments and creating a bridge between local communities and you as students to deal with issues such as housing, security and targeting dealing with community needs. I want to investigate working with local MP’s and taking your agenda to them, show them your University of Brighton voice.
Better communication across the board in order to help students feel involved in all aspects of student life and encourage access to things they previously knew nothing about. I am determined to improve readership of the Pebble and open up opportunities for others to become involved in student-run projects. How many of you know there is a University radio? We can utilise this potential to inform students and publicise your societies, clubs and course events; allowing students to get involved from every campus. I propose that we make more use of social networking and allow students to come to debate and to argue and be allowed to feel passionate about the future of their University before the time here is over and done with and it all feels too late. The University of Brighton has our money to spend; let’s all get involved to feel that the money is being spent wisely and with our core interests in mind.
Finally, I will campaign against segregation. We don’t need it, here or anywhere. It doesn’t help anyone in any walk of life and we don’t need separation between the different campuses. We are one University of Brighton. I want to spend as much time as I can with students from all campuses to stimulate connection and develop better inter-relations in the name of a happier, brighter and more supportive environment for all.
