Hi, my name is Terry Preston, I am a final year Sport and exercise science student here at the University of Brighton, and I am running for the position of Student Union Vice President Activities and Events. Having being at this university for 4 years I have witnessed the highs and lows of university life.
Throughout my years at this university I have become very active within the students union by working with previous sabbatical officers to run various events including, 3 Freshers weeks as well as summer garden parties, holly balls and 4 RAG weeks, which have raised more and more money for charity each year. I believe that with this experience of running these sorts of events I am an ideal candidate for the position of SUVP Activities and Events.
Throughout my2 years on the sports federation committee and 4 years as an elected member of the SU council as Entertainments officer, I have seen some vast changes including the recent restructuring of the union. Next year I will use the Events forums based at each campus as a large focus point to get feedback on events and to hear your voices, as to what entertainment you guy’s want. With Brighton being such a diverse university these forums are needed for you to voice your opinion.
I feel that the profile of UBSU still needs to be raised further with greater use of the website. Many students don’t understand what UBSU is, and this should be a main part of their university life, and need to realise the SU is there to help you.
If elected I will work for you the students to ensure that you are represented in all areas not just Activities and Events. If elected I will:
- Volunteer schemes: I intend to work with local communities across all campuses to get students the opportunity to enhance their CVs by opting to do some volunteer work. This can increase your life experience within larger projects. I would like to introduce an award scheme where people gain points for being part of voluntary projects, societies and sports teams. This will allow employers to have a look at the person behind the degree and can make the individual stand out above the rest. A ‘Brighton Award’ will be rated highly and worth achieving.
- Work towards creating a Society ID, similar to ‘Brighton Panthers’ with kit so people can stand out and be appreciated for their work within their societies
- At the beginning of the year I would like to run a society committee training day, where the society committee can be training in how to run the society effectively. At the end of the academic year I would like to run a society federation dinner and award the most active and best-administrated societies alongside further awards to celebrate achievements of the hard work and commitment.
- Ensure that Brighton’s nightlife stays second to none and ensure we retain great deals for you and relations with our nightclubs. We should allow external promoters to pay to advertise allowing many options for our diverse culture here in Brighton and outreach positions.
- Work closely with outreach posts to increase the quality of nightlife and activities available to them.
- Use the campus Events forums as much as possible so a wide range of students have their say, Its unlikely everybody wants the same thing,
- Work with sport Brighton and ensure the development of the facilities allows the opportunity for all to have the opportunity to use facilities.
- I will represent all students at the highest level of committees within the university as I have done so over the last 4 years.
