Tom Bourlet’s Manifesto for Vice President of Activities and Events
Hey, my name is Tom Bourlet; I’m a final year business student and I will be running for the role of Vice President of Activities and Events.
I’m a member of the drama society and have enjoyed my time at university immensely! I wish for other students to also receive the amazing treatment that I received, yet there is inevitably more that can be done to further extend the enjoyment students will have.
I have been involved in and run a number of activities such as Flashmob events (a massive pie throwing match), and charitable events (such as Africa Day and a sponsored run).
I aim to make the process of event organisation more open to ideas and concepts from you, the Students. You know better than anyone else what you like, and the student union should attempt to please every student possible. A closer connection should be built between the student union and you so that every time you have an idea on an improvement, then we are on hand to help in any way possible.
Fresher’s week has always been a highly anticipated period, yet following Fresher’s week, the list of events begins to dwindle. Events should continue to occur throughout the year, not just for fresher’s week! I wish to arrange a number of events through the year which will hopefully meet everyone’s taste, and I’m constantly listening to great ideas for these events. An example of some of the events that have been highlighted from the feedback gathered are Bungee jumping, spa trips, go-karting, paintballing, sphering (flying down a hill in a ball) and short trips such as Dublin, Madrid or Paris. And without saying, there will undoubtedly be a huge number of messy nights out arranged!
The fresher’s week was a huge success last year and I will look to build on this accomplishment, however while discussing fresher’s week with students, a number of potential improvements have been highlighted. Some felt that the music at the final club for almost every night of Fresher’s was incredibly repetitive. While some may be a fan of chart music, it is important to offer students a week they won’t forget by ensuring clubs play a variety of music and are not overly cramped. As a sixth form student, I was involved in promoting new bands, such as the Kooks and the Automatics, by arranging events and gigs. I would like to use this experience to arrange regular large events involving the latest music from every genre.
The undeniable success of the past fresher’s week was held back by one major issue: The final club turned away a number of students at the door, despite the fact they had paid for their t-shirts/entry. This highlights the importance of judging the numbers of students and offering a choice of large clubs to choose from. And an alternative from the overpriced ‘Tru’ would be a great relief for many!
Being a business student, I found my group of friends were predominantly business students as well. I feel there should be more interaction between courses, yet this requires direction and organising. I want to arrange events that will bring people from different courses and campuses together. An example could be a traffic light night, with different campuses or courses holding a different coloured t-shirt to each other e.g. Eastbourne in Red with Falmer in Yellow, with a large amount of the proceedings being donated to a charitable cause.
While some courses have a student representative or leader, many do not, from my experience with the Business department. Each course should have a team of representatives to arrange activities and nights out, elected by you. I will make it a strong aim to ensure every course has a team of representatives to help enhance the opportunities available to the students.
I aim to secure the highest amount of funding for every sports team and society, from table tennis to the poker society. No team or society should be overlooked, as every student deserves the right to high quality treatment!
Most of these policies are based around greater integration, so therefore I will push for a bar run by the university, or with special deals for students, to be the main meeting place for students. Somewhere for students to hang out and meet new people would be amazing! This is something Sussex University has and I would love to see at our university.
So if you feel I can help improve the Student Union then please vote for me online between the 15th and the 19th of March. Vote Bourlet!
