► VPAA - Emily-Ann Nash

Re-elect Emily-Ann Nash for Vice-President Academic Affairs

Who am I, and what have I achieved for students?

Thank you for taking time to read my manifesto. I am Emily-Ann Nash and for the last 6 months I have been Vice-President Education and Equalities at Brighton Students Union. As well as representing students on various levels of university committees and carrying out my job role, I have made the following achievements for students within my two remits:

  •      I have worked collaboratively with library management to ensure a 24 hour library service during exam times, had the toilets opened in the library during the daytime and after listening to students I have campaigned to have a silent floor in the library.

  •      I have introduced the course rep policy which ensures that each course has a student representative at course board meetings which ensures the student voice is heard, I am currently working in partnership  with the university to ensure it is implemented at all levels of the institution

  •      I have provided training, support and given purpose to course and faculty reps for the first time which enables them to address and act upon student issues.

  •      I have worked with the university to ensure coursework feedback is given within 15 working days of hand-in

  •  I have campaigned for a well-being zone within the new student union governance structure and worked to implement it. This has ensured that in the coming year a new vice-president role and a new well-being zone is created which is committed to meeting students well-being needs. This in turn will enable the vice-president of academic affairs to solely focus on academic issues

  •       I have been elected onto the NUS national welfare committee, contributing to shaping the national welfare policy for the NUS. The knowledge I gained will act as a foundation on which to form the new well-being zone

  •      I have worked to reinstate Unisex, the sexual health service into our new well-being zone which ensures students continue to have this support and service.

  •       I have represented and won for Mdes art students on various issues within their course which has ensured that students were able to pursue their preferred course and qualification.

  •       I have helped develop the up and coming Union campaign against top-up fees.

So why vote for me again?

  • During the last 6 months I have actively listened to students needs and acted upon them. This is reflected within my accomplishments that have in turn had a huge effect on the lives of many students at the university. I am passionate and knowledgeable about education and the student movement, which puts me in the strong position of being able to understand and act upon the challenges which are currently affecting higher education. In the now and distant future there is growing pressure for cuts in funding to be made in higher education, which is an issue that I want to be actively involved in to ensure that the quality of education at the university is not compromised.

If re-elected what will I achieve for students?

  •      I want to continue the work I have been doing to ensure the library and information services across every campus meet student needs

  •      I will look into hidden course costs, ensuring that the university communicates to students the extra expenses within their course which are required in order to complete their degree.

  •       I will work with the university to enable students to have the option to request exam transcripts so they have a clearer understanding on their exam performance.

  •      I will continue to work with information services to investigate the option of e-feedback and e-submission of coursework this will save students time, stress and money on printing costs.

  •       I will continue my work on making sure that students on Foundation Degrees are equipped with the same skills as students on BA courses in order to make the difficult transition onto their top up year easier.

  •       I will introduce academic events into the unions entertainment program, focusing on academic speakers and film viewings on educational films which can inspire and lead discussion

  •       I will continue my work on implementing the course rep system by ensuring every level of the institution has a student representative.

  •       I will put in place the opportunity for students to have their issues brought to the new school forums run by the school representatives so therefore, academic issues will be more actively addressed.

  •       I will shape the new academic zone, ensuring that the school reps within the zone  have purpose and support in order to collect and represent the student voice

  •       I will ensure that the representation of students is a true reflection of the demographic of the student body, thus including more post-graduates, mature and part time student representatives.

  •       I will create a charter between students, the university and the Students Union, so all parties understand what is expected from one another.

  •       I promise to continue the work I have been doing and more importantly I promise to continue listening to students academic needs and act on them.

To put a stop to your education nightmares,

Re-elect Emily-Ann Nash for Academic Affairs!
