Brighton SU Elections
Brighton Students’ Union is a democratic organisation run to further the interests of Brighton University students. Every year all students are asked to elect those students they want to see running the Union. The Spring General Election selects the full time sabbatical officers of the Union as well as some of the part time positions. These elected officers are responsible for addressing the issues that affect students and being the formal link between students, the Union and the University.
Over the past year we have been looking at the way the Union works and what we need to do to continue to meet the needs of students into the 21st Century. This election is the first with the new officer roles and is a major step towards bringing to life a new way of working, listening, and winning for students.
Only by having representatives from all areas of the University can we ensure that Brighton SU works in a way that does this, and further protects the rights and extends the opportunities available to all students.
2010/11 Elected Officer information
Officer and NUS Conference Delegate positions
There are five full time, 35 part time and five NUS Conference Delegate positions contested in the election. Posts marked * are open to all students. All other posts are limited to students who define themselves as belonging to the group of students they wish to represent.
Students standing for Sabbatical Office should expect to be enrolled at the University of Brighton in the 2011/12 academic year or to graduate in the summer of 2012. Students standing for Executive positions should expect to be enrolled at the University of Brighton in the 2011/12 academic year. NUS Delegates should be enrolled for this academic year and be free to travel. All candidates agree to abide by the election regulations at all times and certify that they are a legitimate candidate for the post they have applied for.
The five full time posts attract a salary in the region of £17,000 pa. The part time posts can be carried out alongside your studies and are an excellent way to volunteer while at University. All posts come with training and personal development opportunities that cannot be found elsewhere as well as the unique experience of making a noticeable difference to the quality of university life.

Sabbatical Officers
Elected to Union Council of Representatives
Full Time Posts, Paid – Circa £17k pa
Time Commitment - 37.5 hours per week
The Sab Team are elected to be the full time representatives of students and are the main day to day decision makers of Brighton SU. Each Officer is elected to deliver for students in a specific area of Union activity. Sabbatical Officers are expected to work at the highest possible level where decisions are being made and make an informed contribution both inside and outside the University for the benefit of all students at The University of Brighton.
Union President*
The Union’s figurehead, Chair of the Board of Trustees, lead representative on the University’s Board of Governors, and Brighton SU’s national spokesperson.
Vice President Academic Affairs*
The lead officer for furthering all students’ academic interests. Promote and develop opportunities for students to shape and inform all areas of their learning experience.
Vice President Campus & Communications*
The managing editor of Union publications and Union link with all student led media. Lead and develop community initiatives and ensure effective cross campus communications.
Vice President Wellbeing*
The lead officer on all issues relating to the wellbeing of students within the University. Develop policies, actions and campaigns informed by students’ needs and enhance the quality of student life.
Vice President Activities & Events*
Enhance the co-curricular experience across all campuses and partner colleges and lead the sports, societies and entertainments programme. Ensure the Union is providing good value, low cost and inclusive activities for all.
Executive Officers
Elected to Union Council of Representatives
Part Time Posts, unpaid
Time Commitment – a few hours per week
The Exec meets monthly with the Sab Team, and other reps from the four policy zones to report and discuss Brighton SU policy, finances and set the agenda for campaigns and action. They have responsibility for ensuring the interests of all students are properly represented and the opportunities, support and services they want and need are the best that can be offered. Exec members are invited to contribute to other Union and University committees or projects to ensure there is always the right student contribution where it is most needed.
Chair of the Union Council of Representatives*
Co-ordinate the Students’ Union’s Council and make sure officers are working in ways that further the aims of Brighton SU and meet the needs of students. The Chair of Union Council is also a member of the Students’ Union Board of Trustees.
Mature Students Representative
Lead on policies, actions and campaigns informed by mature students’ needs, furthering opportunities for mature students to shape and inform all areas of their student experience.
Post Graduate Students’ Representative
Further the interests of both taught and research post graduate students and embed the voice of post graduate students within the Union and the University.
Part Time Students’ Representative
Responsible for the representation of both undergraduate and post graduate part time students, holding a portfolio which extends the academic, social, cultural and participatory opportunities available.
International Students’ Representative
Responsible for the representation of International students and generating opportunities for international students to shape and inform developments in all areas of their student experience.
Non – Portfolio Representative x2*
Elected to promote a positive student experience or a specific agenda or campaign of their own choosing. Consult with students and contribute to actions and campaigns informed by students’ needs and ambitions that extend the opportunities available.
School Academic Representatives

Architecture & Design, Arts & Media, Humanities, Chelsea, Education, CLT, Applied Social Science, Health Professions, Nursing & Midwifery, Business School, Service Management, CMIS, Environment & Technology, PABS, BSMS
Academic Reps are responsible for the representation of students on issues affecting their academic experience within their school. They consult with students and contribute to the development of policies, actions and campaigns informed by students’ needs and ambitions that will extend the academic opportunities available.
Campus Representatives
Elected to Campus & Community Zone
Part Time Posts, unpaid
Time Commitment – a few hours per week
Grand Parade, Moulsecoomb, Falmer, Eastbourne, Hastings, Mid Sussex College, Sussex Downs, City College Brighton, Plumpton
Campus Representatives consult with students and contribute to the development of policies, actions and campaigns informed by students’ needs and ambitions in order to extend the opportunities available on the campus they represent.
Site Entertainment Chair
Elected to Activities & Entertainment Zone
Part Time Posts, unpaid
Time Commitment – a few hours per week
Brighton, Eastbourne, Hastings
Site Entertainment Chairpersons convene site entertainment forums. They are responsible for consulting with students and contributing to the development and delivery of range of student led entertainment that extends social, cultural and developmental opportunities for students.
NUS Conference Delegates* x 5
Travel and some expenses paid
NUS conference is responsible for deciding the policies and priorities of NUS for the year ahead. It is also where the National leadership are elected. Brighton SU is entitled to send five elected delegates to NUS conference. It is their responsibility to ensure the interests of Brighton students are represented when decisions about the leadership and policy of NUS are made.
