► Brighton SU Campaigns

Why campaign?

The Students’ Union campaigns for a better student experience for students studying at the University of Brighton. Although the concept of campaigns to many people includes things such as demonstrations, banners and physical activism, a lot of the time the SU is able to make positive changes within the University at a local level, by lobbying the University and providing evidence that things need to changed in certain areas.

However, there are times when students do need to take more collective action, every year the National Union of Students’ holds a demonstration to highlight the unfairness in the student funding system. As a result Brighton SU has previously organised coaches to enable students to add their support to this demonstration.

Who campaigns?

Elected officers are at the forefront of SU campaigns; they listen to students and make sure that campaigns are run. The Union then discusses the best way to run the campaign at the Student Welfare and Campaigns committee. This committee ensures that officers and students who want to campaign on a particular issue have the resources including budget and staff support to ensure the campaign is run effectively. Students in societies may also wish to run campaigns, these need to relate to the remit of their society, for example this could be an environmental society campaigning for better recycling, or the women’s group campaigning for better rights for women. These campaigns can be run with the support of the Union, or the society may wish to run them on their own. Most campaigns do well with the support of the Union, so you should always get in touch with the Union President to see what support the Union offers
